Printer manufacturers aren’t shy about calling their products “photo printers.” Many consumer All-In-Ones (inkjet printers/copiers/scanners) wear the label, even if they have no more than four colors for their usual ink cartridge—cyan, magenta, yellow, black, or CMYK—instead of the five or six that produce better quality prints. . Some vendors (look at you, HP) even apply the term “photo printer” to inkjet printers with a vintage two-cartridge system (black and tri-colour). And to be fair, some of their output isn’t bad, as long as you’re printing on special photo paper rather than plain or copier paper.

1. EPSON L121

As a designer, I get paid to impress people with images. I bought this printer for my job, expecting it to be similar to older Epsons, but the quality is so amazing that I decided to wallpaper my design studio with images (image attached). The ink isn’t cheap, but the quality of each print is so good that I can use it to sell my own art prints. 10/10

2. Canon PIXMA G3020

The G3020 can connect to your wireless network so you can print wirelessly from your computer, laptop, tablet, phone, toaster, or whatever else you want to print from. I’ve read some complaints about mobile printing not working properly. What I’ve discovered is that if you’re printing from your phone, there are a couple of apps you have to download to make it work properly. One is the “Canon Print Service” app and the other is the “PRINT” app. It’s not all well explained when setting it up, but that’s not a big deal in my book. Another issue I’ve noticed is that people try to print when they’re behind a VPN. To keep things simple, just turn off the VPN when you want to print something. There is a way to set up secure printing, but do you really want to get into that right now? Do not trust me.

There are other features about this printer that you can read out of the box. It scans, faxes and copies. The only thing that kinda bothers you, is that when you’re scanning, you can’t scan to a USB flash drive or a USB drive. You can save to your computer, but that’s no big deal either. This is just a minor annoyance. The manual is more than 500 pages long which is kinda intimidating, but for the most part, no one reads it until they need to. The print quality is great too. You can read about the print quality if you like, but I’ll need more than that. I mostly use this for printing PDFs, manuals I want hard copies of, calendars, children’s homework and liars like that. So I love this printer. The main selling point for me is the money you save with ink. You get a huge amount of ink when you buy your printer and it lasts a long time. I will never buy another HP again. And if you think HP Instant Ink should “save” your money is a good thing, read on.
